About these lessons
These lessons started as a course for one English speaker living in Japan who had taken plenty of lessons that didn't stick. They focus on what you actually say and hear: at home, at the shops, at the station, and in letters from the school.
Every sentence is everyday spoken Japanese in the standard Tokyo style, checked by a native speaker.
Using the lessons
- Tap the speaker next to any line to hear it.
- Use the bar at the bottom of a lesson for a hands-free drill. The screen stays on while it plays.
- Cards hide the English. Tap a card, or "Show English", to check yourself.
If you hear no Japanese voice
- Android: Settings → System → Languages → Text-to-speech output. Choose Google's engine and install the Japanese voice.
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → Japanese, and download a voice.
Lines recorded by a native speaker play those recordings instead.
