Playing with neighbours
Gateball and ground golf groups are usually run by the neighbourhood association or a seniors' club, and newcomers are often welcome. This lesson covers asking to join, taking turns, cheering each other on, and the chat before and after. Tap to hear any line. The bar at the bottom plays a hands-free drill for walking.

25 words for joining in
Each card shows a word and a line you'd hear in the park or at the community centre. Seven reuse words from Everyday Japanese 1 and 3, and two lines use words from Lesson 1.

Joining in: who, where, when
Who runs the groups, where they play, and what you'll hear on the day.
| Japanese | Means | Note |

- Polite with older players. Use です and ます with the regulars, however friendly they are. They may talk to you casually; that's normal.
- Finding a group. Ask at the (community centre) or the neighbourhood association, or just watch at the park and ask. Most groups welcome newcomers.
- Cheering. ナイスショット or ナイスタッチ after a good shot, ドンマイ after a miss. Everyone cheers for everyone.
