On the trail
Once you're walking, the talk is about the path, rests, other walkers and how everyone's legs are holding up. This lesson covers signs and junctions, passing people, bears, turning back, and what to say if someone gets hurt. Tap to hear any line. The bar at the bottom plays a hands-free drill for walking.

Trail signs and notices
Signs you'll see on Japanese trails, and what to do about each one.
| Sign | Meaning | What to do |
|---|
- Uphill goes first. On narrow paths, people coming down usually stop and let uphill walkers pass. Step to the mountain side, not the drop.
- Bears. Bears live in many mountain areas of Japan. Walk with a bell or talk as you go, and take bear warning signs () seriously.
- Emergencies. Call or and say where you are: the mountain, the trail and the nearest signpost. If there's no signal, try higher ground.
