Cafés and takeaway
Café counters move fast: size, hot or iced, eating in or taking out. This lesson covers ordering a drink the way you like it, and the questions staff ask. The same lines work at bakeries, cake shops and fast-food places. Tap to hear any line. The bar at the bottom plays a hands-free drill for walking.

25 café words and lines
Each card shows a word, the form to use, and a sentence from the counter or the table. Many reuse words from earlier lessons.
M
At the counter
Staff ask these one after another. A word plus で is a perfectly good answer.
| Staff say | It means | You say |
|---|
- Short answers are normal. A word + で is enough: , アイスで, Mで.
- Eating in can cost more. Tax on food and soft drinks is 10% to eat in and 8% to take away, which is why staff always ask.
- Sizes. Many chains use S, M and L, and some have their own names. Pointing at the menu is fine.
