Golf basics: holes, par and clubs
Golf in Japan is a big part of work and social life, and most of its words come from English with a Japanese twist. This lesson covers the course, the scores and the clubs, so you can follow a round or a conversation about one. Tap to hear any line. The bar at the bottom plays a hands-free drill for walking.

Scores and the round
Your score on each hole is named by how far it is from par. A round is 18 holes, in two halves of nine.
| Score | Japanese | Note |
|---|
- Par in English. パー4 is said パーフォー, パー3 パースリー and パー5 パーファイブ.
- Out and in. The front nine is アウト and the back nine is イン. Groups often start at the 10th: インスタート.
- Shout ファー. If your ball is heading for someone, shout ファー!. It's the Japanese "Fore!"
- Hole in one. In Japan the lucky player traditionally pays for drinks and gifts, and some golfers buy hole-in-one insurance to cover it.
